Upcoming Event: The Choice Bus in Ware County
HEARTS for Families is a co-sponsoring an event that will be coming to both Ware County middle schools in August.
The Choice Bus, created by the Mattie C. Stewart Foundation will be at Waycross Middle on August 25thand August 26th and at Ware Middle on August 27th and 28th and each student will have the opportunity to tour The Choice Bus.
The Choice Bus is an experience-based learning tool designed to show young people the power of education, as well as the likely consequences of making bad life choices. Upon entering the bus, a four-minute movie will quiz the audience on the earning potential of a dropout versus a high school and college graduate. It contains a full-scale replica of a prison cell, which is hidden behind a curtain and flat screen television. Students are then invited into the prison cell to briefly experience the uncomfortable living conditions. As students exit the bus, they receive a pledge card and are asked to make a commitment to finish school and make good choices. The Choice Bus experience is approximately twenty minutes long and is designed for grades 6-10.
There will be community nights at both schools for parents and community members to come and experience The Choice Bus. The STEP Up Ware Workgroup and the Albany State Social Work Students will have a table set up at these community nights with material for parents on how to talk to their youth about alcohol and about the strategies HEARTS has going on in Waycross. We will be at Waycross Middle on August 25th from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. There will be other organizations and food available. We will be at Ware Middle on August 27th from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m.
