HEARTS™ Official Competency-Based Training Model Description

Because we believe in doing things with excellence, the Nurturing Parenting® Programs (NPP) and many other trainings that HEARTS presents are through an evidence-informed 4-part training model. The training model was researched by HEARTS for Families™ and Emory University.

Part One - Philosophy of the Program

Part 1 is offered online and is self-directed. It includes participant engagement activities and quizzes along the way. If an individual is familiar with the program being trained to facilitate such as NPP, he or she can test out of taking the full online course. Once successfully trained in this part, individuals do not need to repeat Part 1 for any other adaptation of that particular program. Part 1 is a pre-requisite for all other stages of the training model.

Part Two - Program Activities and Practice Opportunities

Part 2 is a group-based training that is specific to the respective Nurturing Parenting Program the individual is choosing to present to community members or clients. Nurturing God’s Way™ is a 21-session program and Part 2 takes 5 days with 1-2 hours per evening of additional training assignments. Training participants receive training workbook, handouts, and hands-on experience using program specific materials.

Training activities include:

  • Experience from each session with group and home practice lessons

  • Some programs include Family Nurturing Plans to address competencies

  • Facilitator practice session opportunities and peer feedback

Optional - Basic Home Visitation Skills™

This additional two-day (14 hours of content delivery) training in Part 2 is provided with curricula involving home-based/individual sessions. Designed for the novice Home Visitor and helpful for experienced Home Visitors, this training addresses an array of skills required to successfully deliver family-based programming in the home setting. There are also pre-training and post-training activities.

Part Three - Implementation Steps for Success

Part 3 is offered online similar to Part 1 in format and benefits. Participants engage with a moderator for each of the modules for successful completion. This competency-based training covers:

  • Program facilitator and coordinator roles

  • Implementation pitfalls to avoid

  • Current cultures regarding moral decay of generations and family dysfunction issues (substance abuse, partner violence, teen parenting, etc.)

  • Jow to score assessments and using assessments to teach participant deficits

  • Creating a marketing / implementation plan for better program success

Part Four - Fidelity Monitoring and Program Consulting

Part 4 is a hands-on program delivery with:

  • Per session Technical Assistance sessions via phone or web with program mentor/consultant

  • Fidelity checks through in-person or web-based site visits

  • Program and training participants surveys and assessments

Certification

Successful training completion earns a Training Participant with a Certificate of Completion. HEARTS for Families certifies a successfully completed training which includes all 4 Parts meeting all training requirements.
