Being the Person Who Shows Up

There are a few times in our lives when we really need to call someone … someone whom we KNOW will show up for us. It could be that moment of having car trouble on the side of the road, or being locked out of your house, or heaven forbid, that one phone call you’re permitted after being arrested for whatever reason. We can pretty much pinpoint in our minds who we would call if any of these instances were to occur. This is a person who we trust, someone who has been there for us in the past, someone who shows true loyalty to us even if they are lecturing us on the way home about having a spare key, or checking our tire pressure regularly, or about whatever it was that landed you in jail for the night.

These are the people who can make us so angry sometimes, but they are also the people who will have your back when someone says something negative about you and you’re not present to defend yourself. They are the people who have your best interest at heart and love you unconditionally. They are the people who believe in you even when you don’t have much faith in yourself. They show up for you, they are there for you, they believe in you, and they love you.

Have you ever been to a child’s recital, or an Elementary School play? When the kids take the stage, they immediately start scanning the audience looking for their parents and family members. The look on their face of uncertainty lets you know they are not sure what to do. You can tell that their spirit is a little bit crushed until they spot you. Their whole attitude changes, their face lights up, and it’s like you two, parent and child, are the only ones in the whole auditorium.
