Traditions & Thanksgiving

Our family Thanksgiving has had to evolve over the years. We used to always make the 4-hour drive down to South Georgia to our cousin’s farm where they grew cotton and had a good-sized pond on their property. Everyone would bring a side dish to help contribute to the meal, but we knew that it couldn’t be something that needed to be refrigerated, because there wouldn’t be any room in the fridge, so we had to be creative about our dish idea. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive at the farm, we would greet each other, have the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on the TV in the background, and catch up with family members for a little bit. The women would be in the kitchen and the men were in the living room talking about sports. But as the rest of the family would start to arrive, we would begin to intermingle, and that’s when we started making our memories.
